That's Plante, who played for Montreal in the 50's, while Orr played (mainly) in the 70's. I get the point, but even if you take into account the inflation of his era vs Lidstrom's era, his numbers are still phenomenal. The only defencemen that could come close to his numbers are Coffey and Art Ross. The fact remains that Orr may of been the best hockey player of all-time. He revolutionized how defencemen played the game, and every game he played (pre-knee injury) he was the best player on the ice and dominated. And take this for what it's worth, but there are numerous stories of Orr being so humble he held of scoring as much as he could so Esposito wouldn't get pissed (for example Don Cherry's book). I honestly think anyone who would take Lidstrom (who was a worldclass defencemen) over Orr either knows nothing about the NHL pre-2000 or they're fucked in the head.
Edit: Just looked up and found there isn't a huge difference in scoring between the two era's (post lockout about 5.3-6 GPG, the early 70's about 6.2-6.85). Bobby Orr didn't play in the 80's, there isn't a 2GPG difference.

What is so hard to understand about people picking Lidstrom? He shut down top forwards thirty minutes a night for twenty years!

I get it Bobby Orr is credited with being one of the first puck-moving defenseman; but Lidstrom perfected the way the game is Played. Lidstrom's Rookie year was 91-92 that's a good decade before the lockout.

And if you are going to talk about Era's at least get it right. The difference between when Orr played and when Lidstrom played was Patrick Roy and the emergence of Butterfly goaltending in the late 80's. Lidstrom would have dominated in any Era of hockey, I don't think Bobby Orr can say the same.

Actually the reason goal scoring went down was Esposito invented the butterfly, Allaire improved it and Roy perfected it, plus defensive systems that were introduced in the 90's. But Orr didn't play in the 80's, he played in the 70's (as the league expanded and merged with the WHL, scoring went up).
Okay, let's use the 90's then for Lidstrom. The 90's actually had even closer goal scoring to the 70's (3.63-2.75 versus 3.5 -3.07). It's a huge stretch to say that Bobby Orr's video game numbers were a product of the era he played for.
Lidstrom would not of dominated in Orr's era, he didn't even dominate in his own? Yes he may be the most reliable defenseman of all-time, but to say he dominated the NHL is ridiculous. Never have I seen Nick Lidstrom take over a game, that wasn't his game. He was a guy who did all the little things exceptionally well. But no one is going to make the mistake of saying he is the best player of all-time, like a lot of people do with Orr.

Well shit, I guess seven Norris Trophies isn't dominant at all. Shutting down the best forwards in the game for 32-minutes a night, nope not dominant.

How can you say Lidstrom is better? If Orr played the same amount of games as Lidstrom his stats would be so much better. Orr was a complete two day defender and for his seasons before his injury he was on the ice for about 180 of his team goals a season and on the ice for about 74 against him while on the ice(power play included) when Lidstrom was on the ice for about 86 goals against when goalies were apparently better. I think Orr is better.

I love how most of these statements are made about players that most ppl must of saw those players play 5 games which were reruns of highlight games..... They all retired or were at the tail end of their careers before we were born.

He did not play 32 minutes a night, and Orr won more Norris's (and other awards) than Lidstrom in a much shorter career.

Just because someone didn't experience something first hand doesn't mean they can't have considerable knowledge on the topic. You just have to use primary sources (stats) and secondary sources (books about Orr, quotes, stories, scouts, etc.) to gain knowledge on things like this.

Orr won the exact same number of Norris. And he most certainly did play over 30 a night until he was over 40. My only point is that there is nothing crazy about taking Lidstrom over Orr.
