Season Five New Feature: LGVFA Champions League & Regional Cups

Before I type any of this out, I want to give props to @electrickeeper as a lot of these ideas come from him. We'll be implementing these changes starting immediately for Season Five

Champions League Tournament

The LGVFA will be replacing the basic playoffs format that we had with a Champions League style tournament which will consist of a group stage as well as a knockout stage. The Champions League will begin at the conclusion of our regular season and will consist of 16 teams as our playoff system did. We will be ignoring the conference standings page on the LG site for playoff implications. I'll be creating a thread at the end of Week 5 which will keep track of all playoff races and playoff implications.

To qualify for the Champions League, you must do one of the following:

1.) Win your division's regional cup. FA Cup, Copa Del Ray, Coppa Italia, DFB-Pokal
2.) Be one of the three best teams in your division that did not win the regional cup.

The Group Stage draw will be similar to the UEFA Champions League draw, where teams from the same division will not be drawn into the same group. The Group Stage will then have each team play each other twice, once home and once away. The top two teams from each groups will enter the knockout round.

In the knockout round, we'll be doing a home-away setup for every round except for the semi-final and final. Though we are unable to host a "neutral" site for these, the higher rated team will be the home team and there will be one game.

Regional Cups

Each division will be hosting a mid-season regional cup tournament. This will be an exciting opportunity for those who have been struggling during the season to steal away a playoff spot and a chance to earn a nice virtual trophy next to your name. With new owners coming in to teams that aren't performing well, this also gives them an opportunity to find themselves in the champions league in which they may have not had the chance.l

All teams in the division will be randomly drawn into an eight team knockout tournament. Each round will consist of one game (on top of your regular three games) to decide who moves on.

There will be one round per week.
