Not everyone is tech savvy, so I'll save some of you from embarrassment. Bandwidth speed tests literally mean nothing in NHL. An entire online game can be downloaded in seconds, and is only several megabytes of data. A 100mb/s download speed is NO different than a 5mb/s download, as nhl isn't even coming close to sending more than 0.05mb/s of data anyways. It only matters if you plan on using 99% of your bandwidth downloading torrents while you play Xbox.

Arguably the ONLY thing that matters is ping, and even that means next to nothing. The ping you see is from your computer to the bandwidth testers servers. What you really need to know is your ping to the EA server you're playing on (one in san antonio texas, chicago illinois, reston virginia, san fran california). But even that isn't important, what would really be telling is the ROUNDTRIP, which is the time to their server and back. This is the most important measurement in online gaming, and it is why you see spikes, and slow grinding games. It's all about roundtrip time NOT download/upload speed. You can find this time by getting the IP of the EA server, and running a program called traceroute to that IP.

A traceroute will almost definitively diagnose who's fault the connection is, where the problem happens (is it your router, your wireless, your isp, EA's server, a server in between?). Nobody ever posts them though. Do we need any easy guide for LG members? If the home/host lag thing is real, at least you could prove it (I've never seen it personally).

What's a decent Ping rate to have? Ever since switching to xbone I can't get a decent connection. It's not even playable at this point

    Current ping to easo.ea.com 180ms - 250ms

Some people live with others and have 10+ devices connected at once. So while I agree that it isn't everything, it definitely means SOMETHING.

That's via wifi so I know the numbers will be a bit high but still, I tested the destiny servers and I'm getting 95ms on the same connection.

I need to fix before the season starts

Nope. If you've looking at connections, you'll see two types of servers. One for EA which hosts player/roster/dashboard data (what you showed), and then connections to Rackspace which is their gaming host/cdn provider. The Rackspace server is where the game is hosted, and should be the one you'll ping. It sends mostly UDP (not TCP) I believe, so deepening on what you monitor connections with you might not even see it listed.

Fr33k I'll get the IP of the closet server to Toronto(reston virginia i believe) and post it when I get a chance.

Games are not hosted on dedicated servers. Everything is P2P. That Rackspace server you're talking about is used for matchmaking/routing...nothing else.

Do you have a source for that? I always thought versus/HUT games were p2p and otp/club were dedicated? I thought EA even confirmed that at some point?

    Yup, HUT/Versus is P2P.

Not sure where you've read that, but that's not true for EASHL or Lobbies, and can easily be verified by hopping in a lobby game with only a couple friends and seeing if you can spot their IP in a traffic inspector (hint, you can't). Many players will also remember back to NHL09, with the old Xbox-Party-IP-Boot trick, where you could only get their IP if they joined a party request (parties P2P). There are also Micrsoft policies regarding multi-player games having to use Kerberos to protect clients, so you won't find any Xbox games with P2P multi player.

What you've heard, and misinterpreted, is that the 'host' in an EASHL game acts as the connection that is used to match the nearest Rackpsace server. This gives the impression that some people are better hosts than others, as they might be connected to a server you aren't used to. Also, if the hosts connection fails or has dropped packets during game loading, everyone gets dropped if it can;'t automatically re-elect a new leader.

I encourage any other questions, or those who think I may be wrong. Lot's of misinformation out there, and we all waste so much time complaining and thinking about stuff that only exists in our heads.

Also, the term 'dedicated' server is a misnomer. It used to mean when two sites/IP's didn't share the same server, but now with cloud, that doesn't make sense anymore as everything is using shared resources anyways. Now we just talk in server power and the amount of clusters. As far as Rackspace is concerned, and EA's servers, I'd say they are pretty standard, not great, not terrible.

I'm going to start a list of all their IP's I've found, I'll update them as I notice them.
