"Scrub Hunter" Hunter Episode 2: nickyP1999 - "Scrub Hunter" Hunter Series..

Welcome to episode TWO of this series that I will put out every so often!

There is a stat that goes around called "Strength of Schedule" that a lot of people don't really understand. People base scrub hunting off of playing low ball teams, and then comparing that to whether it was a playoff team or not.

I am here to expose each line that a person has played against.

Here is the chart that I am using for calculating PR right off the LG site itself:

    Elite
    Dominant
    Pro
    Average
    Rookie
    Pylon
    Bench Freezer

Each line will have an average PR. I will base those lines rating on this chart.

Here is how PR is calculated:

    https://www.leaguegaming.com/forums/index.php?threads/power-rankings-faq.230614/

    Disclaimers:
    • I do not hate anyone that I do this about. This is clearly a big topic right now considering the west debates and Art Ross races. I am clearly just a stats person and I like crunching the numbers.
    • I am calculating these numbers using career PR. I understand that ECU's do not have "Career" PR's on their profile. Instead of using their Career PR, I instead used either their report card PR for the week or their PR for the game against the person that I am writing this up about.
    • I have not included goalies because goalie PR is I find flawed considering the lineups. These are 5v5 stats.
    • I will be factoring in Home/Away record because of the connection issues also. I would be crucified if I didn't do this.
    LETS GET STARTED!

    Final Thoughts

I don't actually decide whether they scrub hunted or not, because that is up to you guys. nickyP1999 was highly requested considering the Art Ross race at the end of the season and I have delivered.

Do you think @nickyP1999 west coasted his way into scrub hunting his opponents?

Funny enough, they're even here if you figure navs 8 point game against big bad edmontons 'dominant line' is a wash.

These threads are fun. Good stuff, Faytal.

If you get time, maybe you could take an average player and do this exercise for them so we can get a point of comparison. How many times does an average player play elite/dominant lines? How many points do they average against above/below average opponents? It would be good to get a baseline.

As a completely mediocre player, I'll sacrifice myself to the slaughter for this exercise. I think it would be cool to see. There was certainly no line ducking from me, and I know we hit some first lines, so we might get a better baseline.

Again, good job on these. Timely and interesting.

(Note: I like NickyPing and Nav and dont blame them for westcoasting).

This is interesting because I think it would be difficult to find many lines that as a whole come out to be "elite" based on their ratings. I'm just basing this observation off the two threads you've posted so far so maybe I'm totally wrong with this guess, but I doubt there's more than maybe two or three lines that average a 46.9 rating or better.

I do love these threads though. Please keep doing them.

I see multiple teams that could possibly pull off the 'Elite' line. It's almost basically a Game 7 line. Washington, Boston, Buffalo, Carolina, etc. Possibly even the Nav line might count as Elite.

Do you include goalies in the ratings? If so there's probably a few more teams that can pull it off, but honestly the only ones I can see possibly doing it are the Rangers, the Kings and the Avalanche, maybe Buffalo because rick and mclovin's ratings can inflate their linemates ratings, but overall there aren't a lot of teams with more than 2 guys that are in that 47+ range. I know Washington has the ability to but they generally like to split their top guys evenly throughout the lineup, so it's probably rare to see a line from them at any point this season that has that 'elite' rating.

I know there are some more teams that *can* accomplish it, but the question is how many times throughout the season they actually did it, because generally speaking the top teams in the league tend to split up the top players in order to win as many games as possible. And it goes without saying why the bottom teams don't put together 'elite' rated lines.

Just an observation I made, I didn't really look deep into it so like I said I could be way off. I'd love if there was a way to find out which guys played the absolute toughest lines all season.

Oddly enough, I managed to face one (yes, I was so inspired by @Faytal_Flow that I figured out my own records lol). I even had the pleasure of playing them on a west coast connection!

The average PR of Washington's line that game is 47.8 (Elite)

I don't factor in goalies. If I did then yes you would see more "Elite" lines. Goalie PR is very flawed I find because a shutout raises it by like 6. It's a very easy stat to increase and decrease rather then forward.

Now that is where my struggle with including goalies ratings in the average comes in.

On the one hand I know goalies are players too so "goalie lives matter" blah blah. On the other, their roles are so different in a hockey game and their stats/ratings can be SO heavily inflated by the success of their teammates, so that's why I question whether they are included and if so, should they be included?

I assume by taking Chuck out of the equation for that particular game that PR does not hit the 'elite' mark, seeing as it's barely over that mark already and Chuck's PR is very high. However if you didn't factor Chuck's PR in initially then this whole post is pointless :p

I agree with that, which I kind of highlighted in my last comment. Thanks for clearing that one up.

Yeah, it drops down to "Dominant" (45.8) but I've got a few games that actually go up bordering on "Elite" when you take the goalies out... which is a bit strange, to say the least.

There’s something to be said when a guy only plays home games on west connection, but won’t even play the “elite” east players. #anyoneelseforharttrophy

I like these exposing threads faytal. Good job.

Maybe it will help reverse the trending mentality of scrub hunting for personnal stats that we are seeing more and more with this new generation.

It feels like most people are scared to play biggies in lg now. People need to learn how to lose.

Also, idk if its just me or my club but when we dominated lesser players in club or league we usually stopped trying to score goals at all cost after a 4 or 5-0 lead out of respect. I think most of the old gens did that.

I could also basically reverse these threads. A big topic last season was if Giroux was carried by eastons. I could take the average PR of each line Giroux played with eastons and without him, and see how the stats compare.

PR is definietly interesting, but a little bit flawed considering the rapid increase and decrease it can have.
