Smit’s End of Week 1 - Top 12

Man this was SO hard to narrow it down to the top 12 because honestly all the teams between 8-20 are very very close. Feels like the skill gaps have narrowed this season which leaves us with 5-6 great teams and a group of early rebuilders. Thankfully every team was able to at least get one win... oh wait.

Without further ado, the End of Week 1’s Top 12


1. Colorado Eagles
The Eagles stormed out of the gate just like most of us thought they would. With the highest goal differential in the league it’s hard to deny Colorado the #1 spot. Next week should be a real test for Colorado as they take on the toughest division in the AHL.

2. Milwaukee Admirals
Even though Milwaukee doesn’t sit atop of their division this week, it’s still my opinion that they claim a slight depth advantage on Iowa. Needless to say both teams should be battling it out all season which should create an instant rivalry.

3. Charlotte Checkers
Another team who isn’t leading their division but still squeaks out the edge when it comes to power rankings. They trail Providence in the Atlantic but I'm a believer the the Bruins might have been taken lightly week 1, and didn’t see a ton of top lines. Little chaos at the moment for the Checkers as they don’t have their roster set heading into the weekend, look for some late changes come Saturday.

4. Toronto Marlies
Sticking with teams who aren’t leading their division, the Marlies come in the top 4 after a great first week, which could’ve actually had them leading the division with one or two better bounces in overtime. Right now Toronto has a very small lead with Goal differential but I’m still a believer that this division is going to come down to the final week of the season.

5. Iowa Wild
Great week coming out of Iowa and can honestly say I didn’t see that one coming. Can make the argument that they are leading their division but their defensive depth is still a question that needs answering in my book.

6. Binghamton Devils
The Baby Dev’s though, built around depth this season every line went 2-1 this season anchored by arguably the best goalie tandem on any team. Surrounded by top 10 teams in the North, Binghamton will have to consistently rely on each other if they want build any separation within the division.

7. Providence Bruins
The Bruins are the definition of a polarizing team, you either love what their building, or you hate who’s building it. Either way can’t argue with results and if your strictly going by numbers you can put the Bruins in the top 5. Diving a little deeper it’s hard not to imagine that other teams took providence lightly which is a key factor to their hot start, look toward next week for the real test.

8. Rochester Americans
Think not landing Nifty threw a wrench in the Americans plans to hit the ground running week 1. But don’t except them to take long to rebound and get away from being a .500 team. With almost every line going 1-1-1 don’t seem it taking much for these guys to start finding 1-2 more wins a week.

9. Syracuse Crunch
Sticking with the theme of teams not leading their division, the Crunch are right in the thick of it when it comes to the hardest division in the A. Syracuse beat up on a couple really bad lines to offset their team stats a little, bit still easily a top 10 team.

10. Cleveland Monsters
I know, I know #10?!? Leading the division, don’t hate me but hear me out. Out of ALL your wins only 2 of them are against teams with winning records in week 1. Not saying that you guys aren’t a good team, just saying that I think the numbers are a little lopsided. Let’s give it another week or 2 and see how everything plays out.

11. Palm Springs
Ok ok ok.... Palm Springs your slowly warming me up to fact that I gave you all an F+ rating. But let’s dive into the numbers for a second, if you take out the one game against Colorado. The combined record of your wins are against teams who are 9-27!! That’s the Easiest strength of schedule in the ENTIRE AHL. Hopefully you can continue to prove me wrong next week also.


12. Utica Comets
Maybe I’m losing it here to be placing Utica in the top 12 still, but I’m a believer that week 1 was a fluke and they have something up their sleeve to turn it all around.

 

Didn't see many top lines, hfds first line, rochesters first line, charlottes first line, and that just brings us to monday at 830, shall I continue?

A loss to Broomball.

 

Listen if you go based of the numbers we should be the top ranked team. We are first in the AHL. I’m not saying we are gonna have zero regulation losses all year, but give credit where credit is due! You copped out and went with the same people who always do well.

Enjoyed the read, people love to complain. If this was based on record it would be Zach reposting the standings. It is an opinion piece that goes beyond the numbers, all of you saying your team should be higher are shitters anyways and should focus on continuing your success not looking for hugs and kisses in a power rankings thread

If you think Neil was the reason we lost these games you’re dumb. Its a team effort and not 1 player caused us to lose 2 games.
