Girgs' 1st Round Predictions

I'm sitting here waiting for my dinner to be ready, so I figured, why the hell not?

Eastern Conference

#3 New Jersey Devils (42-15-7) vs #6 Pittsburgh Penguins (21-35-8 )

Clearly the Devils come into this series as the favorites, and just about everyone thinks it's gonna be a walk in the park for them. The Devils were a good team right from the beginning, always bouncing around between first, second, and third place throughout the season. The Penguins maintained sixth place through just about the entire season, never really moving up or down. Everyone knows the Devils have consistent offense throughout most of their roster. The question of the series is if the Penguins offense can find a boost to match the offense of the Devils.

Prediction: New Jersey wins the series 4-1.

#4 Ottawa Senators (40-20-4) vs #5 New York Islanders (35-23-6)

The two teams in this series are quite close to each other in each aspect of the game. Both teams have good offense, a solid defense core, and average goal-tending. The Islanders were up and down in the standings for most of the season, while the Senators started slow, but steadily climbed their way up the standings into fourth place. This will sure be a good series, and I think this one comes down to how well the Islanders defense plays.

Prediction: New York wins the series 4-3.

Western Conference

#3 Chicago Blackhawks (43-19-2) vs #6 St. Louis Blues (23-37-4)

The Blackhawks started off fairly slow, but heated up significantly in the last few weeks of the season. Most of this was due to the outstanding play of the BoB to capture the Rocket Richard trophy as the leagues leading goal scorer. The Blackhawks have a powerhouse of offensive firepower, along with a good defense and good goal-tending to go with it. This team has put together one of the best rosters in the league. The Blues are a balanced team, with no one that really sticks out. They seem to rely on the team game with everyone chipping in to win. I don't think they'll be able to keep up with the offense that Chicago brings, but crazier things have happened. If the Blues want to make this a series they're going to have to play together as a team and rely on their goalie to bail them out from time to time.

Prediction: Chicago wins the series 4-0.

#4 Anaheim Ducks (34-27-3) vs #5 Phoenix Coyotes (27-32-5)

This could definitely be one of those back and forth series that no one knows what will happen. Both teams posses a few forwards that can be game changers. However, neither team really has a game changing defensemen. But I do believe Anaheim has the better goalie tandem with dalilaama and PHJ. I think this series is going to be a complete rollercoaster, with one game being 7-6, and the next being 3-2 or even 2-1. I don't expect any blowout games in this series. As I stated previously, I believe Anaheim's goal-tending will be the difference in this series.

This is clearly my opinion and prediction of what will happen the first round. Hopefully no one will take offense to anything I said. If you take it that way, I'm sorry, and it wasn't meant to be that way. Good luck to all the teams and let's have a good playoff!

Penguins beat the Devils more times LAST WEEK than you predicted they would win in the entire series. This could be an upset.
