This is a segment I plan to kick off and continue week over week. A few disclaimers, these power rankings are purely and exclusively data driven, I have not watched everyone play, this is purely for entertainment only. I love analytics, and completely recognize they don’t tell you the full story.

Here is how my power rankings work.

Source: LG Player Stats & Advanced Stats

    Statistics utilized and defined:

    1. Save % - Self explainable, but the % saves against total shots.

    2. GAAGoals Against Average. Total Goals/Total Games Played

    3. GSAAGoals Scored Above Average - This is a cumulative stat that represents the number of goals allowed by a goaltender compared to the number of goals that would have been allowed by a league average goalie. The formula is (Shots*(1 – Goals Against)) – League Average. Higher is better, essentially, it’s the number of total goals saved against league average.

    4. GA% - Goals Against Average – This is goals allowed % relative to league goals allowed average. Lower is better, 100 is exactly average, 0 means you have saved 100% of shots faced. Calculation is (Goals Against/Shots Faced) / League Goals Allowed Average

While I did include the data for the entire league, in order to be eligible for this list you had to have played at least ½ of the total number of games played, in this case 13.

Each category is weighted evenly at 25%. I ranked each category and summed the totals to generate an overall rank.

The league averages are as follows:

    League Save % = 82.2%
    League Goals Allowed % = 17.8%
League Goals Against Average = 2.57

Please provide feedback, and if you believe there are other stats I should be taking into a consideration, please let me know.

I could in theory do two separate lists. The challenge is normalizing the data, hence the reason I had a cutoff.

It's not for a lack of love, that's for sure.

I hear ya man, but this is more of a Starting goalies power rankings, not a league wide one. You've alienated half the goalies from the get go.

*edit* It's still awesome you took the time to do it btw!

Great article. I do agree that it would be best to include all goalies moving forward. It will be easier to do with more games played. You can set something like a minimum games required to = 3 * # of weeks completed. Then do one where if games played < 4.5 * # of weeks. That can help loosely determine if they are a backup or not. I picked 4.5 because goalies who split weeks 5-4 with one another will average out to that.

The BIG next step would be to point out some interesting things in the data to help focus readers attention To certain areas.

I think the best step for you with this is to do some formulas to categorize the goalies. That way you can include all goalies and maybe evaluate in separate categories.

You could classify goalies as either backup, co-starter, or starter.

Backups - average of less than 4 games per week

    Co-starter - between 4-5 games per week

Starter - greater than 5 games.

I would actually recommend calculating it based on most recent 4 weeks of data. Obviously at this point it would mean all data but in week 8 you would only be looking at average games played from weeks 5-8. Reason being that a team may have had 2 stud Gs early in season and one was classified as a backup but since got traded and has been playing 6 a week. The data would skew to show him as a "co-starter".

No idea how detailed the data is that you pulled but if weekly, you could pull 4 week average and compare to season average to show what goalies have been hot, cold etc
