Great question. It is called direct constructive criticism. An easy way to go about it is provide a compliment (make something up if there isn't one) and then let them know something they could work on in order to improve the line/team. This will result in a civil discussion regarding what you both are seeing/thinking.

 

From experience I think more often than not it leads to people getting upset and then trying to personally attack you. We live in a generation where criticism whether it's constructive or not is something that people can't handle.

 

Example (terrible loose gaps giving up easy zone entries): Hey man, you made a lot of really great 1st pass breakouts and moved the puck well in the O-Zone. However, after watching the game tape, I think we can be a more effective line if we tighten up the gaps in the neutral zone and go d to d a little more. Let me know your thoughts and what you were seeing out there.

If he gets upset from this, he isn't a good fit for my team.

 

While I wholeheartedly agree with your point of view I think you'll find that a large portion of the community would not be able to handle that type of criticism.

 

Highly recommend someone good picking him up. Great guy, smart and competitive.
