If player builds had higher overalls then traits taking away from stats wouldn't be a big deal, but since we're using players that are basically 80 overall it's ridiculous. Ideally we have higher overall builds + traits don't take away from stats, but I would be happy with either higher overalls + negative stats OR current overalls + no negative stats.
The negatives are stupid because they don't make any sense, how many attributes don't have a negative?
From a chitter goalies perspective EA has finally made a great hockey game, for me as a goalie I feel traits are useless no reason to use them the specialties yes maybe even height and weight I'm not so sure they affect much either
Its an equal playing field for everyone whether the traits negatively inpact other traits or not. Its the same slice of pie that we all have to eat. As for the argument some people say about players only being a 81 overall. 81 is as good as 99 when everyone is playing them. I feel in a world that is obsessed with customization. Clothing, phones, homes, etc. EA needs to give us the freedom we used to have an just give us full customization of attributes like how it used to be. And also give back the +5, +3, +1 attribute boosts that you can apply to anything which you can earn or purchase. Business wise thats another money making opportunity for EA since they make most of their money on HUT they can at least make a little dough from eashl club, drop in players. the way it is now, its too limiting. And not realistic to put limits on specific player builds when in the past, present, and future there are and will continue to be players whose height and weights are outside of the parameters EA allows us to play with.
I totally agree with the non negative affects of the traits! I personally understand how the negatives are applied. Great stuff Lou!
It's EA style in general to make one thing better and another thing worse, that's their m.o. My favorite trait example is hockey IQ making your player weaker, losing strength. Haha.
In my opinion too many traits take away from your shot in some way. I am not against the negatives just in some cases, for example, beast mode and offensive minded, I feel those traits would not negatively change your shot. If anything it would increase accuracy being better at puck control and offensive awareness. Overall I am happy with the game, there will always be some things that are not liked. Maybe add the option to put the scoreboard on top or bottom depending on preference.
I'd be Ok with something like this. Primary Trait Slot Level 1 Traits= +3 attributes in specialized areas with no downside Level 2 Traits= +5 attributes in specialized areas with a -1 in other specialized areas Secondary Trait Slot Level 1 Traits= +2 attributes in specialized areas with no downside Level 2 Traits= +4 attributes in specialized areas with = -2 in other specialized areas I feel like the Primary Trait is what a character should really excel at and have little to no penalty to it. While the secondary is something they are better in but might lack in some other areas. I feel this would be the best results.
Their needs to be negatives, but the negatives need to make sense. Why the hell does getting balance make my shot bad? It was lazy game design is what the build thing feels like.
I mean if you’re going with that argument maybe go with only you’re primary trait will not have any negatives. Will make you have to think a little more about what you really do wanna use towards primary so you don’t have to deal with the negatives

We should be able to put any attribute wherever we want without caps. We should also be playing with 1st line players. My pro would be the slowest player on the Leafs if he were on that roster, and my player isn't even big. Give us 88-90 overall players instead of 82-84. What's the sticking point with letting us play with players that aren't trash in every other game mode? It makes no sense.
I'm starting to think that this game has trash balancing because EA has foregone hiring someone who specializes in game design entirely for NHL and instead relies on gamechangers and community opinion to try and balance their game. Playerbase opinion matters but there are a lot of more subtle factors in design that CAUSE those opinions than the surface things a regular person who plays the game will bring up. Balancing solely off player opinion just causes different problems. Poke checking is a great example, when it's too strong forwards complain they can't play offense, so they "balance" it, and then defensemen complain that they can't play defense. People are ALWAYS going to complain, the goal is just to keep the complaints in the minority. If people loudly complain about a mechanic for different reasons no matter how you balance it's probably indicative that something is inherently wrong with the system you have in place. Right now builds are less the problem than how much RNG is in the game. Want to poke check? You might poke check a dude perfectly from 15 feet behind him or maybe you'll be right in front of him and you'll miss the puck and trip him, same with stick lifting. Want to not get scored on five hole from the point with 91 five hole? Stand square to an unscreened shot and hope the game doesn't decide to screw you. Or go butterfly as soon as they enter the zone(don't do that). Having broken systems breeds exploity gameplay to marginalize the impact those systems have on the game, and there's currently way too many systems in the game that are less skill based and more just "Position yourself as well as you can, press a button and hope for the best"(Deflections being the most egregious example but that's a different post), and until EA increases the budget of NHL so they can have a team of more than like five programmers and a box of pizza to feed them the game will never be well balanced. Anyway I'm way off topic, within the current system there should be negative modifiers to attributes but I also think that they should change the system entirely to allow more build customization
Who care about the traits? Fix the goalies, 2019 goals in one game is ridiculous. And doesn't matter, AI or human goalie. Really bad.
