35 wins last 2 seasons and pretty much 70pts at C, hey nice third liner! Still upset Tampa moved you I see. Also, there are third liners on pretty much any first lines in the league.

Just trolling lol No ego but to me it's obvious that on paper we were the 1st

I don't understand the strenght of schedule point said earlier in the thread, no disrespect to my westies teammates they did well but from the inside i had the feeling our west line had no brainer the easiest schedule on the team. Even if you look at it better, they did something around 25% of their season points only in the last week, while i still remember sweating being scheduled against 3x top team and a potentially g7 against wild

After discussing with the committee I've come to the point that I got this wrong, but I'd like to provide more insight on how this decision was made.

Comparing Snowman and Mreed's strength of schedules (I considered both as representatives of the two lines), Snowman had a 8.69 conference SOS and a 18 league SOS, while Mreed had a 9.06 conference SOS and a 17.48 league SOS (basically a wash). Then there's the playoff/non-playoff games comparison: Snowman went 6-6-1 with 33 points and a -3 vs. playoff teams while nearly doubling his points vs. non-playoff teams with 61 (and going 11-2-1, +40). Mreed went 7-4-1 with 26 points and a +3 vs. playoff teams while nearly tripling his points vs. non-playoff teams with 75 (and going 12-2-1, +45). With this info, Mreed's line played one more non-playoff team, and with lines faced, Mreed played two more 3rd lines (Mreed: 8-2-0, Snowman: 6-2-0). I understand this is a lot of info to read, so here's how I interpreted it. Snowman being under .500 vs. playoff teams while being a minus was a big knock for me. Both had comparable SOS numbers, both had noticeable increases in production when playing weaker competition, and while Mreed did it at a bigger clip, still managed to be a plus vs. playoff teams. There's the line breakdown, where I do see that the west line played 10 thirds, I also know that Seattle's west played 10 third lines, and knowing that they also feasted on weaker teams when having the chance to play them, and the effect of having a west line available for use, ultimately I sided with just the west line as St. Louis' only 1st.

Did I get that wrong? At this point I think so, but that's the entirety of what my thought process was at the time of compiling stats. Should've just held both lines as a 1st line standard instead of overanalyzing at the time, so that's on me. My apologies.

But then imagine our stats if we have played over 20 games in the season against opponents on 100ms and them not. Stats are all relative and imo i just think it's wrong to rate lines based on the season stats. I mean it's not because malkin puts more points in a season than crosby that crosby is suddently the second center, i don't know if you see my point. It's like the akon line, we all know akon was 1C ( man he was 12mil ), having a bad season should not put him calculated as the 2C at the end... He's 1C/1st line on paper and after people beat him you tell them they beated the 2C, because of his bad stats, but that's actually because they beated him lol i know it's probably tough to determine all this but i really think rating lines on the season stats is kinda wrong in many cases

    Hope my english is understandable...

I think that's the whole point though in the fact that they are a west line, they do make their opponents play on 100ms, and that makes them, no matter what you wanna say about them as individual players, a tough matchup. IMO I understand your Crosby/Malkin comparison, but I think you don't give the greatest example with Akon. Track record with him and Cody, absolute no doubt first liners/award nominees, everyone knows that. They had major struggles this season, Akon had 13 wins and Cody had 11, and if you ask Cody he certainly didn't feel like he was or played like a 1st liner, meanwhile Pelley and Moti got some big wins for that team to get them into the playoffs. Now I know everyone's first instinct is to insert someone like a Claus or a Bo in this scenario and then ask what the opinion would be then, and to be honest I think every case is unique, but my standpoint is if someone struggled so badly in a season that they lost 14+ of their 27 games, can you really consider them a 1st line producer on the season? Everyone has their reputations, I totally understand that, and especially in a league like this it's almost always warranted, but this is where the problem comes with labelling name value over production value. We're dealing with awards for the season alone. Are career numbers and reputations always the way to go when valuing a line? No. Are the season stats always the way to go when valuing a line? No. I think there's a balance to be had that truthfully you can't always pinpoint and perfect, and that's why you get situations like we're having now where although I understand the argument from you and Fog, I also think it's worth bringing up a different perspective.
