Announcing a new feature, Server Selection Beta! What is it? Now that NHL 21 allows games to select which server to use, we've come up with a tool to try to do this job instead of how EA NHL decides servers. How Does it work? We look at each person in a game and get the City of their internet Service Provider, then we convert that city location into a GPS location. This location would be the center of that IPS's city, so it is not a precise location, or is it sharing any of your personal information. From this location we measure the distance to each of EA's 5 game servers and average up everyones location to each server. The closer the 12 guys are to a server, thats the server LG recommends the lobby use. Is it a rule to use LG's recommended server? Right now no. This is in BETA, we want to test it in the LGHL first before we use this for LGHL or Sharks. But we ask players to test this feature out on their games. Give us your feedback Please tell us your thoughts and comments on this algorithm. Is this something you'd like the league to adopt as a league wide rule? How could it be improved? Your feedback is important Thanks everyone!
Which of the 2 outputs are the deciding factor to determine the recommended server? (Avg. Distance or Best Server) If this is not an implemented rule yet and it is just in BETA testing... how will we determine which server to use for the current season?
This is going to be a massively unpopular opinion but I think it should defaulted to, or be heavily weighted towards the Central server so that this free league is more accessible to more players. I just want to be clear that I'm not talking about the Esports leagues since money is on the line for those games and the lowest possible ping really matters. If the recommended server becomes a rule then these new changes don't really give much of a disadvantage to East/Central players since the East+Central servers are so close together, but it's a big blow to West players. "West lines" are no longer going to be a thing since the best case scenario for them are likely the Central server which is still high ping for West players. But even then, it seems likely it's going to end on an East server most games. Here's an example from a pre-season game tonight. 5 for Montreal, 3 for Virginia, 1 Central, and 2 West. The West guys will likely be playing on ~80 ping, and the Northeast guys will likely be on sub 20 ping. But if this was played on Central the West guys might be around 55-65 ping and the East guys might only be around 25-35. Ultimately I feel like we should just keep it simple and default to Central every game (for the LGHL, not Esports), and if both teams can agree to use another server then they can use another server. And yes, I know the vast majority of people on the site are in the East. But there are people who don't sign up because they don't want to play on very high ping, and West players that do sign up are at a clear disadvantage. I've already received 3 messages in the past 2 days from people advertising West leagues.
EA should be set to Central for the game in general not just LG that way its more fair for everyone not just 1 sided for 5 or 6 straight years! Make it EQUAL
Theoretically, they couldn't if this method was required for choosing servers. All the other team would have to do is put out 6 east guys and the best server is probably going to be Central. The best connection for the lobby would be the best average ping all the way around. McDonald talked about it on NoThumbs last week and explained the whole server choice thought process better than I probably could. Id recommend listening to it if you haven't already, or if you have more questions. They probably cover it in the video. Youtube link:
Can't speak for Americans, but western Canada people get better ping to the North East server than Central. Most probably don't realise it and think they're on Central, but I paid enough attention to my ping when the new servers came in to know the difference. I get 65 on NE and 77 on Cent.
Sadly this is not good enough. The big breakthrough should be a even ping among all servers. The people in the West are in no way competitive when choosing to play C. Face-offs are a 25% of win.. Unacceptable.
