Its still a couple or three years off I believe. Seems the NFL likes the arrangement they have with EA as well.

they will do nothing , they don't have too since this is not really that big of a deal.... I have always been curious to know how these guys can use past names , I thought they were still part of the Union... The NFL & NFLPA signed exclusives to EA sports , but don't the retired guys still pay Union dues or make contributions?
no need for updates with retired players. (which is a big part of it0 I am assuming that they got the permission from the retired players being used in the game

I think it they can only restrict players that haven't officially filled out the retirement forms. Like Jake Plummer, not that' he'd be in the game.
Which would explain why you had to use current rosters on the anniversary releases of Madden. Old school game but current players. I believe they have to renew their deal with the NFLPA every year, and it includes only active players and free agents. Thats why they had to pay for the mostly B-List legends on 07.
