This is something I've been doing for the AHL for a few seasons and it has slowly evolved into quite the excel stat sheet. I update and post it weekly. If you don't want to read this skip to the end to see the link for the sheet. Let me know if you all are interested in me posting this each week with updated stats.

Hello everyone, a new season is under way which means I am back with more of my player ratings. This season you will notice a much cleaner and professional looking stat sheet. Also you will notice the addition of the advance stats which I introduced at the end of last year. Unfortunately that means my formula needs tweaking again which is what you all are for. This first post will not show the top 3 players at each position like normal but a break down of how the ratings work. Next week I will highlight the top producing players.

New this season is a requirement of games played in order to be ranked. Because of how some of the stats fit into the formula a player with way less games played than the majority could greatly affect ratings. So this season, a player must average 2 games a week. (After week 1-2 GP, after week 2-4 GP, after week 3-6 GP, etc.). Also this season unfortunately, players are now separated into 3 groups; forwards, defense, and goalie. In the past, each position was separate. This is not something I wanted to do but the advance stats were not letting me separate by position. Hopefully, that can get fixed and I can separate by position again.

This next part is complicated and I will do my best to explain. If you don't care to know how the formula works and don't want to give feedback skip to the bottom. You will find the link to check out the ratings for all players in the AHL.

    BREAKDOWN FOR FORWARDS

*Anywhere there is a comma means that the categories listed are used together to create a value. It does not mean each one is the percentage listed. Also not that where I put a category will not change how the formula calculates it. So putting assists in team play instead of offense will still generate the same value. I just put it there to help with my initial percentages.*

    Offense: 80%

    -Goals (G): 15%
    -Goal % (G%), Goal Support (GS): 25%
    -Assists (A): 9%
    -Assists % (A%), Goal Support (GS): 15%
    -Offensive Zone Efficiency (OZE): 9.6%
    -Powerplay Efficiency (P2E): 6.4%

    Defense: 10%
    -Own End Efficiency (OEE): 3%
    -Shot Against Factor (SAF): 1%
-Personal Penalty Kill Efficiency (PPKE): 1.5%
    -Goals Against (2nd GA): 1%
    -Takeaways (TA): 3%
    -Blocked Shots (BS): 0.5%

    Team Play: 10%
    -Plus/Minus: 1%
    -Penalty Minutes: 4%
    -Hits: 1%
    -Giveaways (1st GA): 4%

    BREAKDOWN FOR DEFENSEMEN

*Anywhere there is a comma means that the categories listed are used together to create a value. It does not mean each one is the percentage listed. Also not that where I put a category will not change how the formula calculates it. So putting assists in team play instead of offense will still generate the same value. I just put it there to help with my initial percentages.*

    Offense: 20%

    -Goals (G), Goal % (G%), Goal Support (GS): 10%
    -Assists (A), Assists % (A%), Goal Support (GS) : 6%
    -Offensive Zone Efficiency (OZE): 2.4%
    -Powerplay Efficiency (P2E): 1.6%

    Defense: 50%
    -Own End Efficiency (OEE): 15%
    -Shot Against Factor (SAF): 5%
-Personal Penalty Kill Efficiency (PPKE): 7.5%
    -Goals Against (2nd GA): 5%
    -Takeaways (TA): 15%
    -Blocked Shots (BS): 2.5%

    Team Play: 30%
    -Plus/Minus: 3%
    -Penalty Minutes: 12%
    -Hits: 3%
    -Giveaways (1st GA): 12%

    BREAKDOWN FOR GOALIES

*Anywhere there is a comma means that the categories listed are used together to create a value. It does not mean each one is the percentage listed. Also not that where I put a category will not change how the formula calculates it. So putting assists in team play instead of offense will still generate the same value. I just put it there to help with my initial percentages.*

    Total: 100%
    -Saves: 11%
    -Shutouts (SO): 6%
    -Save %: 46%
    -Goals Against Average (GAA): 16%
-Wins (W), Games Played (GP): 21%

    LINK AND WRAP-UP

Thank you for all those who took the time to read and thank you all who give constructive feedback. I am doing this to give the community a cool, different stat to look at and I want it to be fair for everyone. Giving scorers proper credit but also giving credit to amazing defensive forwards and defensemen. As I was typing I did notice a discrepancy between the forwards and defensemen formulas and I am going to do some research to make that more consistent. If there is any questions about anything involving this post or the stat sheet please let me know and I will gladly clarify.

Here is the link to see how you rate against your competitors. Enjoy!

    Hey, hi!

I can't speak for forwards or defensemen, but this ranks goalies MUCH better than the current power ranking system in place with the website. Could this be used to determine the power rankings within the website? It accounts for performance, work load, and dominant games. Like, the only thing it's lacking is some means to grade the strength of the goalie's team and opposition, which I'm sure is something that could be provided via the website. I dunno.

Even if there's a couple things that could be improved on these rankings just make...way more sense. Like way more.

That's what I was going for. Originally I wanted to come up with a system to rank defensive defensemen better who dont score and then I got asked to do it for goalies and forwards. This season is the first time I've added the advanced stats so the formula needs tweaking with the feedback from the community. One more season of tweaking and I think we will have a solid system.

What you taking about? Getting a 2 save shutout makes you a better goalie than getting a 2-1 or 3-2 win with 20+saves.

Lol, fr tho your right. The rating system LG uses for goalies is awful. It overvalues getting carried.

Pretty sure there is a way to freeze the top row and the Left column so you can scroll up and doen, left and right and keep track of which stat you are reviewing.

It is set up for that but when you view it from your phone it doesnt work. A laptop or computer does it better.

Update it manually at the end of each week. It's a real easy copy and paste. I'm going to be working on a script for matlab to run and do that part for me so it would update live and I'd never have to do any work for it again beside revise the formula.

    @xMAssStAtiC-,

Awesome write up in regards to a different look at stats & rankings. I think this way speaks volumes as it doesn't just show who did what. It shows other important stats that I like especially being a defensemen. The current rank system usually just highlights offensive minded defensemen & not defensemen who don't usually produce offensively but in other ways. Keep up the good work @xMAssStAtiC-.

Always thought this was great material in the A. LG rankings come from a planet we still have not discovered yet. Keep up the great work buddy and thanks for the time you put in.

As of now no, because it's not on members stat or advanced stat. If the LG staff update it then I will definitely revise the equation and put it in there.
