Just got done playing 3 games online with burnt.

    In a word: phenomenal.

I'm still going to get MLB 2k5 (ESPN) but it will probably get sold because I don't know how it could be any better than MVP. Online play was a blast, we had a variety of hits (no HR though, close on a few occasions, but we're both MVP veterans so we know how to pitch) and the games were all close.

All 3 games we played All-Star with manual fielding, which was about perfect.

For you HDTV owners (that has support for the 720p resolution) your jaw will hit the floor when you see this game. Last year's had 720p support in it as well, but they've really upped the ante. Crisp graphics, smooth and lifelike animations, players actually have momentum and there's no speed burst (making it far more realistic compared to what we've been used to). The pitcher/batter interface is the best in the industry, bar none. I really can't say enough about this game, and it's cheap too boot (although I'd gladly play $60+ for a game this polished and complete).

As soon as you go online, it has a roster update, although there's still quite a few players that need to be moved around, but they're pretty good for the most part. Apparently, you can use custom rosters online as well (you can play minor league baseball online too).

I know we're going to wait until everyone has played both games to make a decision on the league here, but at this point (w/o seeing MLB 2k5 personally) it seems like a no brainer. I can't imagine it can get any better than this for online video game baseball.

    More later...

WOW..EA is buying everything. They even bought Jon

I had a feeling this game would be awesome. Explain the feature where the batter can tell what pitch is coming by the color of the ball out of the pitcher's hand.

Also, you said we could play with customized rosters. Does this mean that we can have a draft type of league?

I've only played one game and I agree with all impressions up to this point. The game feels alot better than last year and the animations are much smoother this year. The one question I have though is when did the Dodgers change their uniforms? The no longer play with names on the back of the jersey. I saw this in Spring Training and thought it was because it's the begining of Spring, but in the game there are no names. It looks werid!

    1. I thought that the ball color thing would be a turnoff when I read about it in previews, but after seeing it in action, it's very subtle and actually makes sense. Real life hitters can watch the rotation on the ball to help figure out what time of pitch is coming and which way it's going to break and this sorta does that. It's not very noticable, but just enough if you're paying attention.

    2. I haven't tried it yet, but it asked what roster I wanted to use when I went online and when setting up a game online there's an option to select a custom roster. I would assume that you could do a draft type of league, but everyone in the league would be required to get the same roster file (I guess), unless there's a way to transfer it to each other online (for those of you without Action Replay).

I've now played 2 games online and 5 offline. I must say the graphics, animations, and sounds of the game are amazing and trumps anything I've ever seen before in a baseball game. I was also skeptical of the colored balls indicating the pitch type but as Jon said it is very subtle. I'm loving the pitching and throwing meters. The diving with the stick and running controls not quite used to yet but that will come with time.

Okay, I have a stupid question. Last year we were able to sim a season and then unlock all unlockables. I thought we simmed up to the last game of the season and then saved your season. Then you would go into the playoffs and gain a bunch of points - I tried this and it didn't work.

It's quite possible I messed it up. If anyone has had success w/ this, please let us/me know! :)

    Thanks in advance!

So far im liking this game. Im still unsure if im pitching right though, i see 'perfect pitch' and then the computer jacks it for a HR quite often. Any of you mvp vets have any advice?

I assume you are talking about offline. But same would go for online against a human opponent if you can hit the perfect pitch mark online. (I struggle online with that for some reason and not sure why) Make sure you are hitting the hitters cold areas Those marked with Blue, or White. Stay away from the Red Zones You really have to hit the edges of the strike zone with precision, and mix up your pitches. Like inside fastballs high for 2 strikes and then a changeup low and outside.

Well the only thing that I can point out that upsets me with MVP that I?ve seen is when a ball is hit to the outfield, it shows up as a white circle. A couple times the ball was hit and the game switched to my outfielder. The outfielder?s name shows up in white type and I couldn?t tell where the ball was going. The white circle was actually under the name of my player, but by the time I saw it both balls dropped in for what would have surely been outs.

I guess I also don?t necessarily know exactly where the strike zone is as it seems a bit high for me and most of the time I keep thinking I should be hitting the bottom of the Zone and they are called balls. (I do think it?s cool how the strike zone does change in size as David Eckstein?s zone is noticeably smaller than most).

Other than that I?m impressed with the game play, I really like how the fielders handle throwing the ball around.

One cool thing that happened to me, i was trying to field a ball with my outfielder and i dove into the wall. He got hurt and had to leave the game. LOL.

I keep hitting the left trigger (was turbo in espn) when fielding and it switches me to another player :(. Have to unlearn that habit fast.

"perfect pitch" simply means that you hit the accuracy mark at 100% so it should be thrown pretty much exactly on target.

Now, if that target was right in the middle, dead red, then it doesn't mean the CPU (or human) will whiff... it just means that your pitch will be accurate compared to where you were aiming.

Also, make sure you are holding the pitch button down to get full effort before releasing the meter. This shrinks the accuracy zone, but makes your pitches more effective.

As for Conner's comment on the strikezone - do you have the variable strikezone option turned on? If so, the umps will call balls and strikes outside of the viewable border (which you can turn on and off).

What I'm really liking is the fact that you can move around in the box and shift your hot/cold zones left and right. If a pitcher is jamming you inside because you have a row of cold zones on that part of the plate, simply back off a bit and if he throws to that same spot again it will be the middle portion of your hitting zone. Neat stuff.

sounds like we'll have another ESPN/EA battle coming up. My wife bought me ESPN, so I'm gonna trade some games at EB (2 non-sports titles for $10) and pick up MVP.

So far I am really impressed with MVP. I have had ESPN for a couple of years now, and MVP seems to be better than those. I really enjoy this game, although I have only scored 1 run after playing 5 games... Any tips on scoring and hitting. Do you guys hold down for uppercut, and etc.. or do you just swing and not touch the left stick. All in all, a very fun game. BTW - I had to turn the last name indicator off so that I can catch some fly balls that last names seem to block.

Lastly, has anyone had any lag when playing online. I played two games and both games had terrible lag issues. I would press the pitch button and 2 seconds later it would start. :?

Yes, any hitting advice would be greatly appreciated. I can pitch, but the hitting has me baffled at the moment. My only hits are groundouts, lazy fly outs, or line drive fly outs. I can't hit hr's, balls in the game, or just plain ass base hits... :(

ive posted this already but it might get lost in the shuffle but...

did anybody read the back of your game to see this statement

Makes me to think that the online part will soon end right after baseball ends... Meaning we dont have this game for a year to play...

MLB 2k5 <== Might actually be the way we have to go after 30days after the season...

MVP might be the bettter game (i dont know yet) But we 'll have to plan our seasons around this news KNOW WHAT I MEAN
