The Presidents' Trophy is an award presented by the National Hockey League (NHL) to the team that finishes with the most points (i.e. best record) during the NHL regular season. It has been awarded to the best regular season team since 1985-86, but just 8 of the 33 times has the winner gone on to also win the Stanley Cup. How does LG stack up? We'll take a quick look at the last 15 teams to win the Presidents' Trophy in the LGHL and decide... is the Presidents' Trophy cursed?

The LGHL winner has gone on to win the Cup 2/15 times (~13%) compared to the NHL winner capturing the Cup 8/33 times (~24%).

Some statistics about our Presidents' Trophy Winners:

    Opponents
9/13 teams that beat the Presidents' Trophy Winners went on to play in the Stanley Cup Finals
7/13 teams that beat the Presidents' Trophy Winners went on to win the Stanley Cup
Note: Out of 13 because 2 Presidents' Trophy Winners won the Stanley Cup, thus did not lose to anyone

A Rundown of All the Past Presidents' Trophy Winners

    S31 :team28: Arizona Coyotes @Lehkonen x 62 @Gilbzey @Wesley Snip3zzz
The Presidents' Trophy was hotly contested for much of the season with four teams being in the race to capture it. Despite some missed opportunities to strengthen their claim, the Coyotes ended up capturing the trophy with a 9-1 record in the last week with their only loss coming to the Anaheim Ducks, the main challenger for best regular season record for much of the season. Even though the Coyotes were heavy favorites, the Oilers still took the Coyotes to Game 6 where the Coyotes would come from behind and eliminate the Oilers pushing the Yotes to face a familiar foe, the Anaheim Ducks. This would be where the story would end.
Result: Arizona Coyotes are defeated 4-3 by the Anaheim Ducks in the Western Conference Semifinals
Anaheim Ducks Result: Stanley Cup Finalists

    S30 :team8: Colorado Avalanche @Givemedings16 @React 10 @Ragey23
Another season where there was minimal breathing room for any team in the lead. It eventually came down to two teams in the same division once again (partially due to the Avalanche losing one of their star players). The Colorado Avalanche won the Presidents' Trophy on the last day of the season by defeating the team that was chasing them, the Nashville Predators, and finishing off a struggling St. Louis Blues team to clinch the trophy. The Avalanche faced off as huge favorites over the Vegas who were able to push the Avalanche to a Game 7 before falling 2-1. The Avs would then meet up with their regular season rivals, the Predators, who proved to be a worthy opponent as well with a comeback win in Game 6 ending the Avalanche's run.
Result: Colorado Avalanche are defeated 4-2 by the Nashville Predators in the Western Conference Semifinals
Nashville Predators Result: Western Conference Finalists

    S29 :team75: Chicago Blackhawks @Sejje @D4D USA @Duganator III
The Blackhawks were so dominant most of the season that they didn't even have anyone in the rear view mirror. They lost just 7 games the last 4 weeks of the season going 30-5-2, and probably weren't all too concerned with anyone even approaching them for most of that time. Despite that dominance, the community wasn't quite as confident with the Hawks versus their first round match up in the Arizona Coyotes with one of their star players out for the playoffs, and the Coyotes were able to force a Game 7 before falling 4-2. The Hawks would then match up with the Jets who had a bit to prove as their rookie owner wouldn't want an early playoff exit. The Jets would prove to be to much to handle as they won consecutive games to eliminate the Hawks.
Result: Chicago Blackhawks are defeated 4-2 by the Winnipeg Jets in the Western Conference Semifinals
Winnipeg Jets Result: Stanley Cup Champions

    S28 :team75: Chicago Blackhawks @Gwan @GB521 @Gilleh
Another Presidents' Trophy race where it was neck and neck for most of the season. The team chasing them, the San Jose Sharks, had a disastrous week 6 that gave the Hawks a lead they would never relinquish winning the trophy with 129 points in the standings compared to San Jose's 128 points. Going with the theme so far, the Hawks had trouble in the first round as the underdog Dallas Stars push it to a Game 7 before the Hawks finally dispatch them by a score of 5-3. After they make quick work of the Avalanche, they meet up with the second best regular season team who give them all they can handle. Even though it was filled with star players and was assumed to be a tight checking affair, the Hawks were able to get out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period and shut down any hopes of a comeback after that. Their trip to the Stanley Cup Final saw them overpowering the New York Islanders with the Cup clinching game ending by forfeit.
Result: Stanley Cup Champions (defeated the New York Islanders 4-0 in the Stanley Cup Final)

    S27 :team391: Winnipeg Jets @Gilleh @FlowMaster Joe @GB521
The Jets had one of the best records ever in LG capturing a 70-8-4 record which gave them 144 points in the standings. Even with that, they actually only led the race by 11 points over the San Jose Sharks at 133. Widely regarded as one of the best teams ever put together, the Jets made quick work of their first two playoff match ups beating the Arizona Coyotes in 4 and the Nashville Predators in 5. Next had them matching up against the second best team during the regular season, the San Jose Sharks. The Sharks faced elimination in Game 6, but were able to force a Game 7. What was mostly a neutral zone game had the Jets put in the winning goal from the blue line late in the 3rd period moving them on with a score of 2-1. Making it to the Stanley Cup Finals is no small feat, and they were matching up with a Penguins squad who had only dropped a single game on the other side of the bracket. Despite going up 2-0, the Jets dropped 3 in a row until they were able to force a Game 7. The Jets were favorites with two of the Penguins best players unavailable for the game, but captain clutch @Karmuh x 86 was able to get loose in front of the net and slam home a rebound late in the 3rd to send the Jets home with nothing. Final score: 2-1.
Result: Winnipeg Jets are defeated 4-3 in the Stanley Cup Finals by the Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Penguins Result: Stanley Cup Champions

    S26 :team391: Winnipeg Jets @FlowMaster Joe @Boany @Kbsmith37
Prior to the Stanley Cup Final season, the Jets had another dominant season racking up 133 points and leading the race by 18 points at the end of the season. Also, 3 defensemen as management; I like it. They swept the Avalanche in round one and took the Blues out in round two winning 3 consecutive games after going down 2-1 in the series. They would then face the team they would knock out next season in the Western Conference Finals. Unfortunately, the Jets' offense just dried up against the stifling Sharks where they had just 4 goals throughout the series and were sent off after just 5 games.
Result: Winnipeg Jets are defeated 4-1 in the Western Conference Finals by the San Jose Sharks
San Jose Sharks Result: Stanley Cup Champions

    S25 :team3: St Louis Blues @l3l Ray l8l @mayweddaa @Ryanskov
The Blues didn't face much adversity this season besides getting in a bit of trouble in week five where they dropped 5 of their 9 games. However, they only lost 14 other games that season and had the most dangerous offense in the league scoring 50 more goals than the next highest team. They beat a Los Angeles Kings team that limped into the playoffs in 5 games before running into another iteration of the Jets team that has had so much success in later seasons. They were outscored 13-8 in the 5-game series which saw them lose three consecutive games to be eliminated from the playoffs.
Result: St Louis Blues are defeated 4-1 in the Western Conference Semifinals by the Winnipeg Jets
Winnipeg Jets Result: Stanley Cup Champions

    S24 :team23: Florida Panthers @Dumba x 55 @Stifmeister x 7 @AJ Hendricks
Finally, a Presidents' Trophy won by the East! The Panthers played in a shortened season where they mostly dominated with a 43-9-2 record which saw them end the season on an 18-game winning streak. Though they lead by 11 points at the end of the season, they were on pace for a 17-point lead on the Presidents' Trophy by the end of 82 games. The community vote was surely lopsided as they were about to face off versus the Maple Leafs who secured just 60 points during the regular season. A series that saw 3 overtime games and 4 one-goal games ended with a 5-0 blowout and the Leafs sending the Panthers packing in the first round.
Result: Florida Panthers are defeated 4-2 in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals by the Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto Maple Leafs Result: Eastern Conference Semifinalists

    S23 :team18: Buffalo Sabres @DDW4 @MattMurr @Rehanek
The Sabres had a dominating defense which likely lead them to the best regular season record despite it coming by just two points. They really only had one iffy week where they lost 5 of 9 including to the second best regular season team, but it wasn't enough to keep them from winning the Presidents' Trophy. The playoffs saw them in plenty of one-goal games which they mostly came out on the right side of with 9 one-goal games in 12 games against the Panthers and Canadiens (both of which ended 4-2 in favor of the Sabres). The Eastern Conference Finals had them up against an Islanders team that solidified its role as a top team at the trade deadline and had scored the 3rd most goals in the league throughout the season. The Sabres were on the wrong side of an 8-1 blowout and dropped all 3 one-goal games during the series to end their season.
Result: Buffalo Sabres are defeated 4-2 in the Eastern Conference Finals by the New York Islanders
New York Islanders Result: Stanley Cup Champions

    S22 :team76: Los Angeles Kings @SJUSoccer9 @NeNe @officialmark07
The Kings had one of the tightest defenses in the West to go along with one of the most dangerous offenses. This was increasingly evident in the playoffs where they beat the Ducks, the Oilers, and the Coyotes in 5 games each series en route to a spot in the Stanley Cup Final. The team that they would match up against, the Detroit Red Wings, came out of the first wildcard in the East and had gone to 7 games in each of their three Eastern Conference series prevailing each time. The Red Wings were battle-hardened by the time they got to the Stanley Cup Finals. After splitting the first two games, the next 4 were all one-goal games, and Detroit won 3 of those 4 defeating the Kings and capturing Lord Stanley.
Result: Los Angeles Kings are defeated 4-2 in the Stanley Cup Finals by the Detroit Red Wings
Detroit Red Wings Result: Stanley Cup Champions

    S21 :team77: Nashville Predators @a1xFREAKx13 @nO Undies On @slammerama
The Predators finish with the best record in another shortened season just edging out a divisional opponent, the Dallas Stars, with 80 points to their 77. Their first round match up was the fifth place finisher from the Pacific Division, the Vancouver Canucks, who finished the season with a -15 goal differential. Per usual, it's tough to eliminate teams in the playoff, and the Predators played six games before finally ousting the Canucks. The Stars proved a much more dangerous opponent as they swept the Predators outscoring them 17-8.
Result: Nashville Predators are defeated 4-0 in the Western Conference Semifinals by the Dallas Stars
Dallas Stars Result: Western Conference Finalists

    S20 :team15: San Jose Sharks @SweeT 9 LoU 84 @Steve Stefani @DOLPHWEEEEEEEEN
The Sharks had a host of teams creeping up on them including the Canadiens, Hurricanes, Predators, and Stars; they had a rough last week, but were still able to lead the next highest team by two points to capture the Presidents' Trophy. That rough week followed into the first two playoff games versus the 2nd wildcard Minnesota Wild, but they go on to win four straight and tame the Wild. Next up is the Oilers who they were 2-3 in the regular season against. The Oilers ended up giving them fits in playoffs as well going up 3-1 leaving the Sharks having to win three straight games to move on. The Sharks go down early in the first, but they're able to tie it up in the third sending the game to overtime. Unfortunately, the Sharks won't go any further, though, as they're eliminated in double overtime as the Oilers move on.
Result: San Jose Sharks are defeated 4-3 in the Western Conference Semifinals by the Edmonton Oilers
Edmonton Oilers Results: Stanley Cup Finalists

    S19 :team7: New Jersey Devils @Kopy @AzDvo @AMalcs
Another race that was down to the wire, though they clinched their division much earlier. The Devils finished with the best goal differential and top offense which appears to be a pattern among winners. They sweep the Hurricanes in the first round. Then, they're put in situations where they have to force a Game 7 in both of their remaining Eastern Conference series. Both the series against the Capitals and the series against the Penguins go to overtime in Game 7 where the Devils prevail. Once again, they go down in the series in the Stanley Cup Final against the Winnipeg Jets. Faced with a 3-1 series deficit, they win Game 5 and move onto Game 6 hoping they can persevere once more. The Jets won't have any of it, however, and end the series by winning 3-0 in Game 6.
Result: New Jersey Devils are defeated 4-2 in the Stanley Cup Finals by the Winnipeg Jets
Winnipeg Jets Result: Stanley Cup Champions

    S18 :team78: Pittsburgh Penguins @mfricha
The Penguins finish on a 10-game win streak that saw them overtake two other teams to finish with the best record in the league. They enter the playoffs as the hottest team in the league only to drop the first two games to the Capitals getting outscored 12-5. Facing an early deficit, the Penguins end up winning each of the last 3 games of the series allowing just two goals during that span. They go head to head against the Islanders who were one of the most improved teams from the trade deadline. After winning the series opener, the Penguins lost three straight before forcing a Game 6. The Islanders powerplay proved dangerous as they went 3 for 5 and had the Penguins down early. The Penguins fought back scoring two goals to send the game to overtime before the Islanders put the last nail in the coffin.
Result: Pittsburgh Penguins are defeated 4-2 in the Eastern Conference Semifinals by the New York Islanders
New York Islanders Result: Eastern Conference Finalists

    S17 :team76: Los Angeles Kings @lan Moran @Dos Peso
The Kings were tied with the Florida Panthers going into the last week. One team had a good week, and the other team had a bad one. So, the Kings take home the Presidents' Trophy. The Kings make quick work of a Blackhawks team that barely squeaked into the playoffs. The Kings then swept the Edmonton Oilers in the second round outscoring them 14-8 in those four games. The first wildcard Dallas Stars make it out of the Central side of the bracket, and the Kings push them to the brink of elimination. Somehow, the Stars fight back winning three straight games to force a Game 7. The game is tied at 2 going into the third when the Kings find the back of the net going on to win 3-2 and play for the Stanley Cup. The Islanders, who won went 12-5 in the Eastern side of the bracket, take the series lead going up 2-1, but end up having to force a Game 7 after the Kings win two consecutive games. Game 7 sees the Islanders all over the Kings with a TOA of 8:11 to 2:03, but the Kings get a powerplay goal and go on to win 2-1.
Result: Stanley Cup Champions (defeated the New York Islanders 4-3 in the Stanley Cup Final)
