Before we start, I want to make sure everyone knows that no member of the committee was or will be allowed to vote for an award in which they are nominated.

The Community Vote will be included in the final vote, along with the committee votes.

Also, for Strength of schedule, the lower the number, the tougher your schedule. If your SOS was a 7.8 (Conf) and a 15.2 (League), your average game played would be against the 8th place team in the conference, and 15th in the league as a whole. Really high=really poor SOS

On top of that, something new we have introduced this season is SOS (Lines), for this we had people go through every single game for every single nominee, and determine at the time of that game, what line they were facing off against. We initially tested this with one person's games, and had 2 of us go through each game independently and write down what we thought each line was. We found that we agreed on every single game, so we went through the rest working together. Can it be considered subjective? Yes, but we have people doing this who are about as unbiased as you can get, and we felt like this measurement combined with the normal team-based SOS would paint a fuller picture.

We've also added Home and Away records, both this and the line based SOS were heavily requested, this is our first go around with it, so if you guys think there are better ways, we are open to suggestions.

Finally, to explain a new stat that we've included this season, from the thread where it was first added to the site; "Own End Efficiency (OEE): While many people who never get points claim to be “shutdown” defenders few are, this is your put up or shut up stat boys. Measuring the amount of time an opponent needs to score on average against you." Pretty straightforward, the higher the number, the better in zone defense you've been playing. It's how much zone time opponents need to score against you.

If you guys have any questions as to why someone was not included, I will be happy to answer and provide the numbers to back it up.

Also at the bottom I've included all of the stats and info we have for the finalists, please feel free to use them before you vote.

This season for the calder, we have more finalists than we have in the past. This is due to 2 reasons; first, the fact that there were simply so many good rookie seasons, we wanted to be able to acknowledge as many of these guys as possible. Secondly, this award spans across 3 positions, so we felt we should include people from all 3 spots, and in order to do that fairly, it meant more finalists.

    With that being said, here are your 12 finalists for the Season 8 Norris Trophy;

The highly touted 1st overall pick, Fog came into the league with plenty of expectations, especially with so much discussion and debate over who Vibez should take with the pick. Fog showed his worth with a great rookie season, and I'm sure Vibez is not at all disappointed with his choice. Amongst rookie forwards, Fog was 2nd in points per game, at 2.70, as well as 3rd for forwards in goals against average. He also tied for the 3rd most wins, at 20, and in just 27 games played. However, he had substantially the worst team based strength of schedule for all rookies, almost entering the 20's, and he also played the least amount of playoff teams, with just 6 all season. He also had the 2nd fewest takeaways amongst finalists, with 83. On the other hand, he had the fewest giveaways for forward finalists, and he had the best production vs playoff teams, with a very impressive 3.33PPG, albeit in just 6 games. He also was 2nd in goals per game, and 1st in assists per game vs playoff teams.

Part of last season's L2 gang in Iowa, Beast made the transition to the NHL this season, taking GM for Tommy in his 1st full season. After setting the world on fire in the AHL previously, he didn't skip a beat stepping right onto the top line for the Hurricanes, flanking JClaus. Beast not only had the most total wins, with 24, he also had the most wins vs playoff teams with 13, and had the most wins vs first lines with 10. He also had the 3rd toughest team-based SOS, and tied for 2nd in rookie points. On the other hand, Beast had the most giveaways of any finalist, with 387, 57 more than anyone else. He also had the 3rd fewest takeaways with 84. Regardless, Beast tied for the lowest goals against average of any rookie, with a 1.64GAA. He also had easily the best Own End Efficiency at 3:34, and also was 2nd in total plus minus at a +48, and had the best +/- vs playoff teams, at +25.

The old gen superstar finally made his way back to leagues this season, as he was another part of the very highly debated top 5 in this season's draft. He ended up going 4th to Boston, and immediately stepped in to make a big difference for the playoff bound Bruins. Slayer played the most playoff teams of any rookie, with 21 games played vs playoff teams, and played by far the toughest team based SOS at 12.30. He also had the 2nd most wins vs 1st lines, with 8. However, he had the lowest points per game for forward finalists by a substantial amount, and also had the worst total plus minus, going just a +10. He also had the 2nd fewest total wins, with 17. Conversely, he had the most takeaways of any forward finalist, as well as the 2nd lowest goals against average amongst forwards. He also played the 2nd most amount of 1st lines, with almost half of his games coming vs 1sts, 12 in total.

One of many rookies for the Hurricanes this season, the relatively unknown Dudester was able to come right into the NHL and have arguably the best season of his at any level so far in his LG career. Dudester had the most total assists and highest assists per game of any rookie, and also tied for 3rd in total wins, with 20, despite playing just 25 games. He was also 3rd for rookies in +/- at a +38. On the contrary, Dudester played the 2nd easiest team based strength of schedule at just a 18.36, and also played the least amount of first lines of any rookie, with 4. He also had the lowest goals per game of any rookie forward. That being said, he did go 3-1 in those 4 games vs 1st lines, and also was 3rd in points per game amongst rookies and 2nd in points per game vs playoff teams.

A former linemate in the CHL of first round pick @SilvaL15L, Bento was seen as the lesser regarded of the two coming into this season, but showed that he should not have been slept on, as he fell to 43rd overall in the draft. Bento produced like a top 5 pick though, as he put up the most points and highest points per game for all rookies, as well as the 2nd highest assists per game, and also had the 3rd most takeaways for rookie forwards at 93. For all that, he had the highest goals against average for any finalist, at 2.63, as well as having the 3rd fewest wins vs playoff teams, and only maintaining an even rating vs playoff teams. He also saw a big drop off in goals per game vs playoff teams. With that said, he had the 3rd fewest giveaways for rookie forwards, and tied for 3rd in most 1st lines played.

Fresh off of a perfect run through the CHL playoffs, where he led the league in scoring in the playoffs, and capped it off with a memorial cup run, Phil dove in head first to the NHL, with his 46 goals leading all rookies. Notably, Phil is the only Calder finalist that was a member of a non-playoff team, and still produced at a high level. He was also first in goals per game vs playoff teams, and was 2nd in +/- vs non-playoff teams. That being said, his strength of schedule was 3rd worst for rookie finalists, and he was also last in takeaways and had the 3rd most giveaways, as well as posting the lowest +/- vs playoff teams, at a -7, and had the worst record vs playoff teams. He also had to play with some of the least heralded linemates on a consistent basis, and despite all of this, went undefeated vs 3rd lines, which gave his team as many points as you could expect him to give.

After a few seasons in the lower leagues, Kered got a chance to prove himself this season, picking up a 500k bid from San Jose, and didn't look back. He was the spearhead offensively of the Sharks "Turd" line, that caught a bunch of teams off guard with their unusual play style, which was to get everything on the net almost all the time. He was 2nd in both goals per game and points amongst finalists, and played the 2nd toughest team-based SOS, with a very strong 13.96. However, he tied for the fewest wins amongst finalists, and saw a drastic drop off in production vs playoff teams, where he was a -1. He also performed the worst vs 1st lines, going just 2-4-1. That being said, he played with undoubtedly the least well known linemates, and also was 3rd in OEE, at 2:58. On top of that, he had the 2nd most takeaways for forward finalists, and the 2nd fewest giveaways for forward finalists.

1 of many from the Gladiators club to be in this season's draft, Turmoilz was seen as a lock for the top 3 for the majority of last season, before falling to 5th on draft day. I'm sure he ended up being pretty happy in hindsight, as he got to play for the now playoff bound Kings. From game 1, he was their anchor on the back end, even switching handedness early on in the season and playing RD due to his team being overloaded with LD's. He managed to put up the highest +/- of all rookies, as well as the highest points per game of any rookie d man, and also tied for the most 1st lines played and won against for rookie d men. However, he had the worst goals against average for d men finalists, as well as the most giveaways for d men, and also tied for the worst own end efficiency of all finalists. With that in mind, he did have the most takeaways of any rookie, forward or d man, and also tied for 3rd most wins of rookies, with 20. He also had the highest assists per game for rookie d men.

The former Eddie Shore (defenseman of the year) winner in the AHL, Hit made the transition to the NHL finally, and was able to slot very comfortably into the Anaheim d core. He had the most goals per game for all rookie d men, as well as the 2nd fewest giveaways for finalists, and maintained the 2nd best +/- vs playoff teams. However, he had the least amount of takeaways for defensemen finalists, and also was the only defensive finalist to not hit 20 wins. He also played the weakest strength of schedule of the dmen. That said, he tied for the most games played and wins vs 1st lines amongst rookie defensemen, and also tied for the most wins vs playoff teams for rookie d men. He also posted the best assists per game for rookie d men.

Another member of the very highly debated top 5 from this season's draft, LaFleur surely left Bo-Dangles happy with his decision to take him 3rd overall after posting solid numbers across the board for the president's trophy winning New York Rangers. LaFleur tied with Beast for the lowest Goals Against Average for all rookies, and also had the fewest giveaways of all finalists, and most wins for rookie d men, at 21. Despite this, he had the lowest points per game of all finalists, and the fewest wins vs 1st lines amongst defensemen. He also was last in goals and assists per game for finalists, and didn't score a goal vs a playoff team this season. Through that, his OEE was 2nd for all rookies at 3:08, he also tied for 4th in takeaways amongst finalists, and also played the 4th toughest schedule, tying for the 3rd most wins vs playoff teams.

A longtime Xbox AHL'er, Murray made the switch this season to PSN, and did it flawlessly, taking the starting role for the Flames, and leading them right into the playoffs on the very last day of the season. Murray was tied for 4th in the entire league in save percentage, as well as 3rd in save percentage vs playoff teams. His team based SOS was 3rd for Vezina nominees, and 1st for rookies. He also was 2nd in GAA for rookies, and 2nd vs playoff teams. He was also 13th overall in GAA league-wide.

After spending the last two seasons up and down between rosters and CHL TC's, Brickwall got a chance to stick in the NHL this season, playing behind the reigning cup champs in Colorado. He did not disappoint, posting an 84.9% between the pipes, which was 2nd best in the league behind Revv. His 84.1% vs playoff teams was 1st for all rookies, and also had the 2nd best GAA in the entire league. He also tied for 6th in shutouts, and had the best shutouts vs playoff teams for rookie finalists.

@LaFleuR11 is one of the best defenceman I've seen play. He has so much skill he could easily be a forward, he might not get award since he's a defender but he deserves a lot credit. He will definitely be in Norris voting next couple seasons if he continues to be a beast

So Kered was 2nd in points, goals, takeaways, giveaways, and 3rd in OEE? All while playing with significantly less known teammates than any of the other finalists?

Sometimes these things kind of answer themselves.

Instead of voting for myself, I voted for the one who deserves it : @One_Nut_Phil81

Despite his record, he almost had the same amount of points than Fog, Bento or Beast with a team like Winnipeg.

I mean put this man on the others guys spot, he probably end up with at least 15 more points, more wins and very close to get the Maurice Richard trophy.

Went with f0g19 since it was a toss up between him and bento for me but in the end i know fog was the anchor of that offense in nsh. Bento was still a big surprise for me ! Pumped to have him in LA

To counter, kered's line had 12 games of NHL experience prior to this season -- 8 for Mino and 4 for kered -- despite all being in either their 5th or 6th seasons in LG. Not only did he not have the benefit of playing with guys like j_marz, Flap, JClaus, frost, B-Bunny, etc., but he did so with the second toughest strength of schedule of any finalist.

It's a really tough Calder vote this season though. We ended up selecting 12 finalists because there were so many deserving players... and, even then, some guys left off were still deserving of it themselves (but we needed to try to reduce numbers).

    It's a real shame if Beast4Ever wins.

Lowest goals against average and a great plus/minus? I wonder if playing with JClaus - the best player in the game and a perennial Selke candidate - had anything to do with that?

No kidding he had good "team" numbers. I'm sure most competent teammates of Josh end up with good team numbers. The few non-team stats you look at - primarily giveaways and take aways - he ranked dead last and it wasnt close.

Josh wins enough awards on his own. You dont need to just hand stuff to the people he carries, too.

Some criticism on how this is being presented.

There's a lot of information, which is good..it's great. It's being presented really poorly here. I think the recaps on each player are nice to read, but the stats paragraphs on each player makes all the information appear convoluted. It's a lot to take in and by the time I'm on the 3rd player I don't remember who's SOS was what and who had what points etc. It's pointless because by the time I got to the last FWD I felt like...well he must be the worst choice. Everything is in a paragraph and one solid color. I felt compelled to just vote for F0G because he was listed 1st and none of the information was sticking with me as I read through this post. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels like this.

The best thing you have going for you is the screenshots on the excel sheet, and even then some of them are including unnecessary information, information not displaying in the best way to compare players, players that were ruled out, etc. The best information here that is presented most clearly to help me make an informed decision is the 3rd screenshot in the post, where each category is labeled and has each player ranked accordingly.

I'd still prefer to see something along the lines of this done across the board:

Ideally an accessible excel sheet where I could sort each category, or at least view neatly. Color coded or bolded for leaders in the category.

Last but not least, I feel there's too many nominees here. I think it's the committees job to rule it down to a final few for the rest of us to decide, but there's far too many here left that are obvious non-contenders for a final vote. I'm not sure what the idea was with that, but ya'll got it wrong.

I appreciate all the work as well, but I think I agree with BBunny. A simple spreadsheet would probably help retain info.

I also think - probably unintendedly - the summaries Josh writes may sway voters based on the word choice. Simply presenting the data is probably the best way to avoid this, and has the added benefit of taking LESS work for Josh and the team, not more.

Thanks for the feedback @B-Bunny i agree it was a lot of finalists, more than we’ve had before. A couple others suggested trimming it down and generally I’d have agreed. This time there were so many guys neck and neck with each other it felt wrong to cut off 5-7 more of these guys. The paragraphs are there to try and highlight the good stuff for each person, but I know it’s a ton to read.
If you know how to set up that excel sheet to make everything sortable like that, I’d be happy to input everything like that for the rest of the awards. I always say we’re looking for feedback to do this stuff better so I really do appreciate messages like this. I’ll try and be more concise for the next one
