Back again. No S.T.E isn't something you get from overstaying your welcome at the Motel 6.

This is a simple 'advanced' stat (really simple to calculate but pretty useful) - it allows us to view which teams are relying on special teams and which teams are stable 5v5. I would love to start implementing more and more of these i.e. PDO, Fenwick, Player Dependancy etc. but there are only so many stats that are easily accessible.

*To calculate S.T.E all you have to do is add a team's PP% and it's PK% which should, on average, come out to 100% - if a team is above 100, their special teams are above average and obviouly anyone below 100 is below average*

Anyways, here are some of the results broken down into categories.

TEAMS THAT ARE SHIT AND WILL REMAIN SHIT:

:team307: Manitoba - It's been a long time since Manitoba has been terrible but this season is just dismal.

    5v5 G Diff: -15
STE: 87.6% (Powerplay operating at just 13.6%)

:team303::team305: Binghamton - Y'all so bad that you don't even have a nice little logo.

    5v5 G Diff: -12
STE: 85.1% (PK at 66% helping drag this number down)

TEAMS THAT ARE BEING SAVED OR HELPED IMMENSELY BY SPECIAL TEAMS:

:team317: Cleveland - So being saved by LeBron wasn't enough for you lot, eh? Now STE gotta save you.

    5v5 G Diff: -14
STE: 107.4% (Helping them hold onto 5th Place)

:team515: Bakersfield - How in the holy hot fudge is this team in 2nd???

    5v5 G Diff: -6
STE: 117.9% (Classic example of how special teams can win you games)

:team390: Milwaukee - How in the holy hot fudge sundae is this team ALSO in 2nd???

    5v5 G Diff: -3
STE: 116.9% (They aren't as bad 5v5 as the others but mama look at that STE!)

TEAMS THAT ARE GOOD AND GETTING DRAGGED DOWN BY SPECIAL TEAMS:

    :team362: Iowa - A 6th Place team that isn't capitalizing on it's opportunities.

    5v5 G Diff: +5
STE: 84.8% (11.1%!!!!!!! on the PP - Jesus Christ)

:team363: San Antonio - They have the best 5v5 DIfference in the league and are in 3rd Place in the division.

    5v5 G Diff: +25
STE: 86.8% (If this team gets it going 5v4 and 4v5... watch out)

:team315: Bridgeport - 4th Place in the best division in the league ain't bad but they could get better.

    5v5 G Diff: +17
STE: 92.5% (Bridgeport is near the top in a lot of categories but a 16.7% PP ain't one)

THE ONLY TEAM TO BE GREAT AT BOTH CATEGORIES AND IT MAKES ME SICK:

:team352: Providence - It only makes sense that the best team is GM'd by a guy with those kind of eyebrows.

    5v5 G Diff: +16
STE: 124.7% (This will probably go down quite a bit but they are still excellent 5v5)

Thank you all for reading and I hope you enjoyed.

We've noticed. You can hear it in the game chat sometimes. "Oh no, we drew a penalty."

Flawed stat. Somehow you need to implement penalties drawn/ penalties taken.

Reason: if you base it strictly on percentage you need to take into account some teams take more/less penalties than others.

Couples in with the fact that after 20 games the sample size isn’t quite big enough the numbers are skewed.

Cool idea tho, hopefully you take this as constructive criticism and continue to build on your idea. Cheers

Edit: I didn’t leave an example, say Milwaukee takes 100 penalties and they get scored on 25 if them they’ll have a 75% PK which is terrible. But then say Rockford takes 10 penalties in the season and only gets scored on once (90%) so their special teams # are through the roof. But the fact they are more disciplined 5v5 doesn’t correlate with your suggestion that teams are getting carried by their special teams because they spend far less time killing pims.

The same scenario can be said for the PP but that is more of a random stat that each team has no control over how many power plays they’re awarded so that number wouldn’t have to be added to the formula to give you a clearer picture that you’re trying to paint
