I noticed a lack of interesting posts this year so I thought I would post a mildly interesting one.

Goalie. When you win you're everyone's friend, but when you lose everyone hates you. Not to mention there is a load of skill at the forward spots so it's tough to stop shots

Center has the most responsibility and is really the only position you can win a game by yourself from

It's center or goalie. Center has to score and defend the slot. Goalies have to stop all us assholes who know how to score. Wingers have it easy score goals and cover the point. Defense is all about player positioning not skill. You really don't need thumbs to be a defenseman If you think the game well and can make the easy break out pass.

I'll go with this as well. There are so many shit centers who do not understand their position and do not cover their man in defensive zone, or leave the zone way too early at the slightest sign of turnover. A great center offers a short pass option to defensemen and can make or break the whole teams breakout. Good wingers are rendered almost useless, if a center doesn't understand their role in getting out of the zone.

You don't need to be that skilled to be a good defenseman. Sound positionally and get the puck up the ice to your center. Lots of d men can be considered good just by doing that

Every position takes skill. goalies if your not skilled you get destroyed, defense if you don't have some skill you can get by with playing great position, wingers have it easy, centers if you don't have skill to win face-off and be good offensively and defensively your a Liability of course bad defense will also hurt the goalie etc. the end of the day the most skilled would be center

Couldn't agree more. Of course I voted defense because well, I am one. But skilled no. Is the center. He is the main attraction and the core of every play from all three zones. A center will make or break any line.

I would consider myself a pretty damn solid dman but not because of skill. I don't break ankles...at all. But what I do have is excellent ice vision and play anticipation coupled with smart positioning. But not skills per say.

Center all day. Hats off to the good ones and fu to the ones who think they are good because they score goals. We can ALL score goals...

While I agree that it's center, I think ppl are undervaluing the skill of Dmen. They have imo the highest ceiling of any position. Look at everything a great dman has to do; defend the blue line, cover down low wraps, face the play to intercept cross creases, how and when to chop, how to make breakouts everything from taking it themselves to flip dumps to wingers behind the D, where to be in the o zone when the play dictates, slap pass, how to play odd man rushes and breakaways correctly, GAP CONTROL, and the list goes on. To say that they don't need thumb skills seems kinda silly to me as every position (maybe not goalie) needs to be able to use the right skill stick.

As someone who plays defense and center exclusively, defense hands down.

Play a game with a bad goalie and you can still win more often than not.

Play a game with a bad center and both your defense and offense turns to poop.

Question isn't about the most important position, its about what takes the most skill. The defensive responsibilities for a center aren't nearly as intensive as a defenseman, and creating offense as a defenseman is obviously way harder. If you are able to be that defenseman, I would say you have a ridiculous skillset.
