With the LG Draft coming up, I was thinking about the way DPs are handled in the NHL. Teams go through a bunch of work to scout for prospects with NHL talent, (sometimes) getting rewarded for their efforts, only to have a maximum of 2 years control over the player. If a team puts in the effort to discover a top talent in the CHL, develop them into a legitimate NHLer, they should have, at least, the option to control their rights for longer than the pre-determined 2 year contract.

As of right now, NHL teams have more control over the players they win in bidding. They have the option to offer 3 year contracts AND they can re-sign those players assuming both parties agree.

Here's my idea for a new rule that could sort of change the way DPs are treated:

When a DPs contract expires (2 seasons), they become an RFA (Restricted Free Agent). They still enter bidding as per usual, but the team controlling the RFA's rights can "match" any bid made on the DP RFA in bidding. If the price gets too high, the team can pull-out and stop matching the bid. Now, just like IRL, if an RFA is signed through free agency (bidding), the team who wins the bid will have to pay compensation to the team who held the RFA's rights.

I'll give an actual example to make it a little bit more clear. I'll be using @l_Giroux_x_28_l in the example because his DP contract just expired and he's arguably the most known and best player in the NHL right now who just had their DP contract expire. (I know Giroux took GM with the Blues, so it's not 100% realistic, but let's pretend he just entered bidding instead)

So, Giroux enters bidding as an RFA. A team, let's say Vancouver (NuckSzn) wants Giroux and bids him up to 10M. There are 2 options here:

    1. Colorado feels like 10M is a fair price, and matches that bid and Giroux remains with Colorado. He can then sign for 1, 2 or 3 seasons and then can be re-signed in the future, etc etc.

    2. Colorado determines 10M is too much to pay for Giroux and let's Vancouver win the bid. Giroux becomes a Canuck with a 10M price tag. Vancouver now has to pay the compensation to Colorado, which for a 10M price tag would be their 1st, 3rd and 4th round picks.

Either way Colorado gets rewarded for their good draft pick 2 seasons ago. They either get to keep their player or they get a bunch of draft picks as compensation for losing him.

    Hypothetical Compensation:
    • 500k to 1M: 4th round pick
    • 1.25M to 2M: 3rd round pick
    • 2.25M to 3M: 3rd + 4th
    • 3.25M to 4M: 2nd
    • 4.25M to 5M: 2nd + 4th
    • 5.25M to 6M: 2nd + 3rd
    • 6.25M to 7M: 2nd + 3rd + 4th
    • 7.25M to 8M: 1st
    • 8.25M to 9M: 1st + 4th
    • 9.25M to 10M: 1st + 3rd + 4th
    • 10.25M or more: 1st + 2nd + 3rd + 4th
What do you guys think? I think it would be pretty cool if we could implement RFA's to LG. It would add an extra element for management to think about, and would add more value to DPs.

Edit: I've been told RFA's used to exist in LG so RIP this idea. I still think it's cool and should come back haha

They abolished the RFA system 2 or 3 seasons ago.

I've been made aware. However, I think they made a mistake.

The current system gives teams with a drafted player no control and value after their 2 seasons are up. RFA gives the team with a drafted player some control and value. The draft pick re sign that was implemented for one off season gives the team with a drafted player all of the control and value. Not sure why they took it out tbh.

Its easy to say it was a mistake when you were not around for it. The RFA system created a lot of issues

100%, I'm speaking from a point of ignorance. But from what I'm hearing, it sounds like there were a couple flaws with the old system that could be tweaked to have it make sense and actually work for the league. Could be completely wrong, but I believe I'm correct lol

Agreed the RFA system was kind of a mess. Getting rid of it completely was not the best route though. Yes it's better than what we had. Teams should have some control over their draft picks when they expire though. I think RFA is definitely an idea that should be revisited. I don't know what the best way to do it would be but I think that would be a good discussion to have between the commissioner, bogs and owners going forward.

    Just wondering

Did you mean for the rfa to join the bidding process at the same time as UFAs?

Yeah. And when the team matches the bid, the timer gets reset. Basically the same as out-bidding the other team, but just matching instead. Same thing in terms of a notification + clock reset though. It wouldn't be like a secret at the end of the timer lol

Not to mention how many times you see a player get drafted and take CHL management.

That problem has been fixed. The draft contract doesn’t run until they are off mgmt. So say someone is picked this season, season 9 the contract doesn’t start running until season 10 after they do the season of mgmt.

That’s pretty awful, you want to combine the RFAs with UFAs? At that point just let them hit UFA. What does the team who has the original rights get instead of another problem to worry about in bidding. If you are suggesting the original team owners get a draft pick still just not worth the issues. RFA was also a way for good players to play out of position end up on a team they want then RFA out of the secondary position to the primary position giving the team that has there rights a chance to get them.

Why not give DP’s 3season incremental contracts.

    E.g top 15
    S1 1.5mil
    S2 2.0mil
    S3 2.5 mil

Would eliminate the hassle for dealing with the RFA system and gives teams an extra year with there DP..

Would mean I’d have to spend an extra year with Johnny boy and bloop tho

People already complain about the quality of players in bidding, adding RFA back only adds to that problem
