I agree in part. Selecting AHL managers after NHL bidding would take way too long and wouldn't give AHL managers enough time to get their plans in order. Removing the multi-season deals isn't really the way to go either. Obviously the AHL Managers in general feel that they run the risk of getting shitted on when it comes to call ups. So having someone come down to our teams is the easiest way to curb that.

In the interest of a 'sim' league, having a AHL TC draft isn't the way to go either. From the sounds of it, the AHL managers are just looking for roster insurance. So adjusting the number of games to become a Veteran is a simple fix to that. Having 6 designated 'two-way' players per NHL roster (3 forwards, 2 defensemen, 1 goalie) will also help since the AHL would know they'll have someone coming down (similar to the real AHL). If the whole organization is communicating, you can easily have players club with their new line-mates to see if the move is a good fit.

Keep in mind, summer season sign-ups are always lower as well. So next season 'should' see a larger player pool.

Maybe the league should look into those NHL managers that are notorious for crippling their AHL teams? The league has done some good work with protecting the CHL rosters from similar situations by implementing the 'call-up protected' players rule as well ECU exemption and the call-up deadline for teams out of contention. There's no reason why we can't do similar with the AHL.

We don't need a complete overhaul of the system (in my humble opinion). If you take a player from us, just give us the ability to have someone come down. In the end we get a player back and don't have to scramble to make 2-for-1 deals or look for quality TC call ups.
