To learn NHL rules, for example what Icing means, you can go to http://www.nhl.com/hockeyu/rulebook/ There might be a easy to understand version somewhere, couldn't find one. As for if NHL 2k8/08 would be too complex, I don't think so. They are both basically the same thing pass, shoot, score. From what I've heard it looks like both games should have a pretty decent learning curve, even for guys who have played NHL games before, except maybe for those that have played NHL 07. Both games are using the right thumbstick this year, so unless you've played NHL 07 or something like Fight Night, it could take some getting used to.
i think the learning curve may seem greater then it actually is. Hockey is probably one of the most enjoyable sports-to-video games and once you learn basic defence you can hold your own.

i actually disagree.. i think it will sell ok, the gameplay from the looks of it will be fantastic compared to years past.. we shall see though..
I think it looks like 2k, but then again Madden looks like Madden and EA hockey looks like EA hockey. It won't sell huge numbers, but hockey games generally don't. I agree with Fiddy, he knows good gameplay when he sees it.
at least they fixed up the goalie animations this year.. only problem is i hate how they go into the splits so much
http://www.2khockey.net/content.html This some good content on some things that are different in the game that don't get mentioned at other gaming sites. My favourite is "The diving pokecheck is now mapped to the Y button (triangle on PS3), which is also used for kneeling and sliding blocks. It is all contextual. This eliminates one of the cheesiest exploits on defense -- diving all over the ice at will to block shots and passes -- and forces players to rely on more realistic defensive tactics, only poke-diving when proper to do so."
